What is the definition of fasting?
Fasting is the act of holding off on eating, drinking, and speaking profanities from sunrise until sunset.
What is the rule of fasting in Islam?
Fasting is an obligation (wagab) that is mandatory for every Muslim that qualifies for it (age, competent, health).
When should you have the intention for fasting?
Your intention must be made before the time of Fajr of the first day of Ramadan. However, any fasting that is done other than Ramadan, which is considered Sunnah; your intention can be accepted even after Fajr.
Must the intention be made every night of Ramadan before the next fasting day?
No, the intention made at the time of Fajr on the first day of Ramadan is enough for the entire month.
Is it allowed to use electronic or astronomical calendars?
It is not acceptable because of the hadith that states we have to fast based on seeing the appearance of the moon, and stop when it has fully disappeared. This is a hadith stated by Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
Who is allowed to not fast/break fast?
Women that are in their menstrual period or women that had just delivered babies (first 40 days since delivery; puerperium) are excused from fasting but must make it up before the next Ramadan. Those that are traveling are excused also but must make it up. The same goes for those that are sick (to a degree); they are excused from fasting but must make it up. However, if the sickness is chronic or permanent, they are permanently excused from fasting, but they must pay a specific donation (in the form of food) for each day that they miss fasting.
How can people pay for those days that they missed fasting?
There are two ways: you can either cook them a meal and invite them over to eat, or give them food that they can bring home and eat/cook for themselves.
What is the preferred food to break your fast with?
It is preferred to break your fast with dates; and if not dates then water.
Are we allowed to use Miswak during Ramadan?
Yes, and it is in fact considered Sunah. You also can use your toothbrush and toothpaste, as long as you don’t swallow anything.
What is the rule for those who have begun the fasting day and who are Junub (ritually impure)?
The fasting is approved, even if it is after Fajr time.
