Zakat Al Fitr (Charity given to the poor at the end of Ramadan)

Is Zakat Al Fitr mandatory?

Yes, it is mandatory for all Muslims.

What are the reasons as to why we do Zakat Al Fitr?

There are several different reasons. One reason is because we are compensating for the sins we have committed while fasting. Another reason is because we are helping those in need.

Who is obligated to do Zakat Al Fitr?

Only a Muslim; and one who is capable of affording to pay charity.

What time do we do Zakat Al Fitr?

We begin Zakat Al Fitr during the time of break fast on the last day of fasting during Ramadan, and it must be completed before the Eid Prayer the following morning.

The nature of Zakat Al Fitr is different from regular charity. It should be paid in the form of food, not money. The food items that are chosen should be determined by the typical and most common food that is consumed in the community. In the past, these food items would include dates, raisins, and flour; and today the items remain similar in addition to other common kitchen necessities such as sugar.

The amount of charity that should be paid should cover every individual in the family. Each family member should be responsible for 5 pounds of charity, and in many cases the father or the head of the family will pay on behalf of his relatives until they are able to pay for themselves. After collecting, your charity can either be distributed to one poor person, or you can split it amongst several.

Finally, the best thing to do at the end of Ramadan is Astaghfar (seeking forgiveness from Allah). The companions of the Prophet (PBUH), have explained that we shouldn’t just worry about good deeds, but we must always pray to Allah for forgiveness so your fasting, prayers, and Duas can all be accepted, especially if you feel like you have not put in enough effort with doing good deeds. By saying “Astaghfirullah” and continuously asking for forgiveness from Allah, inshallah your deeds, prayers, fasting, and duas will all be accepted.
